My selected social issue for this report is Youth Homelessness. The reason why I have chosen this is because, not only do I want to learn and understand more about the struggle and surviving on the streets, but also because I believe in fundamental rights for all human being. A sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity is the root of life to live full of potential. Being homeless takes these benefit away. This essay will focus on the risk factors, impacts and strategies applied when working with young homeless people.

The United Nations has two definitions for homelessness and they are defined as ‘Primary homelessness. This category includes persons living in the streets without a shelter that would fall within the scope of living quarters; Secondary homelessness. This category may include persons with no place of usual residence who move frequently between various types of accommodations’. Many of the young people living on the street would be under these circumstances. Therefore these young people are exposed to inadequate shelter, food, sleep and water which are the most essential to life. The OASIS Youth Refuge says that ‘32,000 homeless young Australians can’t find their way off the streets’ meaning that there are many teenagers across Australia are homeless every night on the streets. Living on the street can be a disadvantage to life of opportunities such as; not attending school which takes away the connection and relationship with friends and school community. Difficulty to get a job, without a job leads to lack of funds which struggling with enough to eat leading to constant hunger. There is no place to call your own which can affect your sense of belonging such as missing a stable connection to a network of friends, family and the community. Mental, emotional and physical health is also affected such as lack of hygiene, lack motivation to keep healthy, loneliness and depression. Loss of purpose in life leads to sense of hopelessness...
