Sophia has been removed from her family and placed into foster care for the second time in the last 2 years due to her mother’s ongoing substance abuse. Sophia has missed many days of school and often comes to school dirty and wearing clothes from the day before. Sophia’s mother does not think she has a problem and blames the system for once again taking her daughter.
1. What can a human service professional do to help this family?
A human services professional can help this family by offering some kind of substance abuse counseling to Sophia’s mom. Although Sophia’s mom does not think she has a problem she may be willing to open up to a drug and alcohol counselor and admit she has a substance abuse problem and start taking the steps to get her daughter back. A human services professional could also help this family by offering counseling to Sophia to help her understand that she has not done anything wrong and that she is going to be properly taken care of. Sophia could also use the help of a tutor to help her catch up on any material she is behind on in school due to missing so many days.
2. How might the family’s previous involvement with the child protection system affect their willingness to engage in services the second time around?
Since the family has been involved with the child protection services system before they may be reluctant to any help that is offered to them. Sophia’s mother is not going to accept the fact that she is the one to blame for her daughter being taken away from her for the second time in such a short period of time. Sophia will probably be scared and confused about why she is being taken away from her family once again and want to know what is wrong with her mother.
