In Muriel Kane article, entitled,’’ right- wing commentator: Poor People voting is ‘un-American’. Matthew Vadum claim that registering the poor to vote is un-American. Vadum goes on to claim that “registering the unproductive to vote is an idea that was heavily promoted by the small-communists Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven”. What are some ways that we can help poor people? Don’t judge people unless you have heard their story. Don’t judge a person by their circumstances because it doesn’t define their character. We can help the poor in so many ways. Even the smallest efforts counts and that can be achieved by Volunteering some of your time, Donating food/clothes, Respecting them, and having small fundraiser to assist them with personal items that they cannot get themselves. Volunteering your time to help the poor does not cost any money. There are many shelter and other organizations that receive funding to help the poor. Why not put your time to use through one of those outlets? At a shelter you can help serve meals, tutor the children who have missed school, start a garden growing vegetables and fruits so that the clients in the shelter can eat them. You can read books and watch movies with the school ages children. Some organizations require long-term commitments. For example, if you are mentoring a child, it must be a long-term commitment because you are forming a relationship. Habitat for Humanity has short-term and long-term trips as well as local programs.
