VOLUNTEERISM

LEARNING EXPERIENCE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING

I have been a volunteer for the past twenty eight years: I have volunteered in registering blood donors for the Red Cross Blood Bank for over ten years. I have also had the privilege of volunteering for the Girl’s Scouts of America and the Boys and Girls club of Illinois for ten year, Hidden place women shelter for five years in conjunction with the helping arms outreach center for twenty six years. Helping others to the next level in their life is one of my passions: I have learned that people will never forget a sincere and loving gesture. As a volunteer I have become a better leader and have become very organized and committed in everything I do. As a volunteer I have gained prestige and honoree positions throughout many communities and organizations. As time goes past the many acknowledgments and welcoming have helped me professionally as well as personally. I have enhanced my skills such as organization, meeting set ups, event planning, delegating work groups, time management, and preparation. In working with the youth at the community centers and shelters, I have become familiar with group dynamics, case studies, meetings evaluations and solutions. I have also learned that Dealing with youths is and will be a learning experience for anyone who puts there self in this position as a volunteer. As a volunteer in a shelter or a community center you will learn about the many attitudes of youths and adults. As a leader this is when your skills and knowledge are and put into action. You are put in the position to teach the people you are dealing with life skills. You learn a little about their family back ground and sometimes their roots: such as their parents as young adults at this time you become attentive to the many needs As I volunteer with teens knowing that all of them are not from the same background. I have learned that some are a member of the community center with no family issues. I have also learned that some are attending the center because they want to be away from their home environment and have been mistreated. In comparing my experience in volunteering with teens verses working a traditional job in my experience I would say that the value of volunteering is a reward that is bigger and deeper, then any job if this is your life passion. My passion is to help people therefore volunteering is very fulfilling for me. The idea of me contributing to an organization or a person’s life is very important to me and can never be measured with money or status. I started volunteering very early in life with friends and family; most people think that a person that’s always volunteering has no personal life, but that’s not true. People volunteer for a variety of reasons. As I started to become older I became more active in volunteering because I wanted to give back to the community, meet new people and gain skills. The reason why I volunteer so much is because volunteering make me feel good and leave with a great feeling at the end of the day: If by chance I could not volunteer there would be a very big void in my life. To me the intrinsic value of volunteering is not about money and status. When I was laid of my job, and could not find work I volunteered at numerous places not looking to be hired, not looking for notoriety or even money, and not looking for anything but to help others. I believe that if you can do a job that most people would never do unless getting paid, you are a true volunteer. Over time you have the opportunity to learn about...
