‘Tsotsi’ a film by Gavin Hood (2005)

This film an adaptation of the novel Tsotsi by Athol Fugard.The film won the 2005 academy award for best film foreign language film and was nominated for the golden globe for best foreign language film in 2006. Tsotsi is the street name used by a young Johannesburg delinquent who has taken to a life of crime in order to support himself. Tsotsi comes from a blighted upbringing- his mother was dying from AIDS related illness, and his father was torturously abusive and he lives with homeless children, a few years later David, who now goes by the name ‘Tsotsi’. He is a leader of gang which includes his friends Butcher, Aap and Boston. He has develop a talent for violence borne of necessity as well as taking strange pleasure in hurting other people .One evening Tsotsi shoots a woman while stealing her car , and only later discovers that infant son is in the back seat. Uncertain of what to do the baby, Tsotsi takes the baby at home and tries to care for it-going so far as to force Miriam, a single mother living nearby, to nurse the baby. With time, Tsotsi learns the basics of child care, and the presence of the baby awakens a sense of humanity in him that life on street had stripped away. Reactions: The infant is not only catalyst for change in Tsotsi’s lifes.The young hoodlum also has fateful encounters with a blustering, homeless cripple in a wheel chair who crosses.Tsotsi and a young widow with a nursing baby whose help Tsotsi needs.
