Reflecting current trends, what different roles do middle-powers play in economic and security global governance ?
The powerful nations such as the United States and the Soviet Union took the lead in the international order since the end of World War II, but the collapse of the Soviet Union and the recent global economic crisis brought changes in the international order led by western powerful leading countries. At first, there is a growing uncertainty about the future of the global economic order after the financial crisis of US in 2008 and Europe in 2010. The reasons from these two crisis may vary, but these brought into question the legitimacy and sustainability of the global economic order dominated by the western leading countries after the Second World War. The skepticism about western's political and economic leadership is based on the prospect that the economic hegemony may move rapidly from the United States and Europe to China and emerging Asia market after those two global crisis. Also, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), terrorism, climate change, and economic imbalances between the rich country and the poor country are all issues that great powers alone cannot resolve. It is not a problem of powerful nations, but a global problem. The mutual cooperation and efforts of all countries is absolutely necessary to solve the problems. Especially the role of middle power is important and necessary than ever for the prosperity and stability of the world economy. Middle-power have diplomatic characteristics such as diplomatic activism, niche diplomacy, coalition building and good international citizenship.
