Dear Bennie Thompson,
I would like to formally indicate my support for bill S. 3308, a bill that is used to help the furnishing of benefits for homeless veterans who are women or single veterans with dependent children. This bill will directly impact two grants administered by the VA, the Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program, and the Grant Program for Homeless Veterans with Special Needs. In regard to the benefits that most males are receiving, this same support should be available to our female veterans. There has been improvement since the Fight to end homelessness, but our female veterans and their dependent children are not included in these services. Women veterans are in need places that are safe for themselves and their children, and most of the homeless facilities in the Jackson, MS area are not accommodating to them. The problem seems to be that there are not enough housing facilities that would offer them the security that they would need. As a result, they are often placed in overcrowded and unsafe situations to raise their children. The bill that was introduced would provide community grants for transitional housing on the condition that it meets physical privacy, safety and security needs, providing legal services to help low income veterans find permanent housing in Jackson, MS. I feel that we are forcing our female veteran mothers to choose between safety for their children over a place to lay the heads for the night. This issue cannot be overlooked because our veterans deserve our support. We must continue to implement available resources to protect our female veterans and their children.
