The United States of America University of Erfurt Position Paper for the General Assembly

The issues before the General Assembly 1st Committee (GA1st) are: Measures to Prevent Terrorists From Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction; Relationship between Disarmament and Development; and The Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space. As xxxxx is a topic of upmost importance The United States of America strongly suggest to consider this topic to be first on the agenda. Also of high priority for the United States is the topic of xxxxxx. The xxxxxx should be considered last on the agenda.

I. Measures to Prevent Terrorists From Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction

The United States of America places a high priority on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by state and non-state actors. The possible connection of WMD's and terrorism poses one of the greatest threats towards the United States and its allies. We know that terrorist groups like Al Qaeda already tried to get their hands on WMD's. They also wouldn't fear to use them against our people and against the people of our global partners.

Right now we can say that they don't have any possibilities to own nuclear, radiological, biological or chemical weapons. But if they would own one of those weapons, the imagination what they could do with it, is horrifying. The consequences of such an attack would result in an unprecedented crisis for Human beings, for the economy and for the international community.

To prevent such happenings the United States supports the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the additional protocol to the International Atomic Energy Agency Safeguard. Furthermore we want to completely implement the Resolution UNSCR 1540 (2004). Right now it is just a mandate, that needs to be extended every 2 or 3 years.
