France Position Paper
France has played a vital role as one of the permanent five members of the United Nations Security Council since its formation in 1945. France’s goal as a permanent member of the security is to create international security that can function within the new multi faceted reality of 21st century international politics. France is willing to reform the number of permanent members to incorporate the G4 members , Japan, Brazil, India, and Germany. 1
Frances role in current conflict scenarios is as follows. In regards to the recent crisis France stands behind other major World powers in condemning the actions of Russia in violating the sovereignty of Ukraine, as it only creates further tension between the division of European and Russian ties that exist in Ukraine.2 In regards to the ongoing civil war in Syria France has been just as tough as the United States, stating that it would support military actions taken by the United States. Despite this claims France willinging backed down when the United States stepped down and acknowledged that France would not act alone. France’s strong position against Syria has been blocked by both China and Russia who say any action taken without entire UN approval would be illegitimate.3 France is committed to ending the long standing crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that has resulted in a tremendous amount of violence since 1996. Recently along with all other members who sit on the security council France voted to pass resolution 2136 which renews the existing sanctions on the DRC
