Dear ___________ _____________,
I’m writing you today to tell you that I feel that one of our city’s biggest social problems is trying to spread awareness about the help needed to find homes for the homeless in our county. Martin County alone has documented eleven children with families that are sleeping in the woods. ( That’s eleven children too many and there could be more that we do not know about!

My name is Kimberly and I’m a 25 year old full time student. I work two jobs and I reside in Palm City. It may seem like my schedule can be hectic at times, but in my free time I’m able to volunteer at a local shelter called Elev8hope. Elev8hope is a wonderful non-profit organization that focuses on inspiring our youth to give back to their community. It’s a program where youth are inspired to create change in their schools and in their community by bringing in donations, cooking meals, and helping to jumpstart the lives of many homeless people in our county. “They are dedicated to helping teach children compassion towards the Earth, People, and Animals” (

While volunteering on Thanksgiving, I was able to help cook and pass out three hundred dinners. Think about it, that’s three hundred hungry mouths I was able to feed and all those hungry mouths were here in our very own county! Did you know that there are about 67,000 homeless people in the United States today? ( It may seem like an enormous number in some ways — but if we break it down city by city, it’s manageable.

Many cities are all participating in a campaign by a national movement of communities called the 100,000 Homes Campaign, which aims to get 100,000 chronically homeless or otherwise particularly vulnerable people into housing. (They are a fifth of the way there.)...
